Otro truco por cortesía de Mac OS X Hints. Lo leí el otro día y casi no lo encuentro cuando fui a tirar de él. Trata sobre como agrupar a los contactos que no estén en ningún grupo.

Mientras utilizas tu ordenador para buscar contactos, esto puede no hacerte falta, pero el día que quieres evitar, por ejemplo, llevar todos los contactos del colegio que te molestatste en recoger pero que no necesitas en tu iPod decides sincronizar sólo algunas listas y al no sincornizar todos … siempre hay uno que te interesa y no está en ninguna lista y por lo tanto no se sincroniza.

Así que hay que meter a la gente en un grupo y para ello has de repasarlos, lo que no es una opción cuando tienes más de 2.000 tarjetas. Así que a través de un script podemos crear un nuevo grupo (”orphans” lo llama el script) que reúne a todos los contactos que no están en ningún grupo. Útil. Mucho.

Para ello, abre la carpeta aplicaciones–>AppleScript–>Editor de scripts, copia y pega el script del link (es el siguiente, pero no se respetan las jerarquías):

Por cierto, aunque me funcionó yo hice un backup de la agenda (menú archivo–>realizar copia de seguridad…), que los scripts los carga el diablo.

En la LSPM Toti comentaba que “su” Safari v2.0.4 sólo guardaba el historial del último día (algo tocó, porque lo normal son cinco y a mi me aparecen seis en un equipo y siete en otro).

A su rescate acudía el sabio Juan de Dios Santander que nos remitía a un truquillo de Mac OS X Hints para cambiar estas cosas. Parece que no los guarda por días sino por ítems, con independencia de su antigüedad…

Bueno, el jueves recogí mi iPod Touch 8 GBs (tras una aventurilla con el asunto de la entrega) en el almacén del transportista. Dada esa circunstancia lo recogí tarde, llegué a casa aún más tarde y esa noche había comprado entradas para el cine … así que lo abrí, lo miré (”oh, qué bonito”), lo enchufé al ordenador y nos fuimos a ver “El Orfanato”.

Al volver del cine, trasteé con él un poco: sincronizar los contactos, jugar con la configuración manual, cargar algunas fotos, alguna peli y a la cama a enseñarselo a mi mujer -estaba leyendo, no durmiendo– “mira para el catálogo de productos y trabajos realizados que útil, los llevas contigo y sin el peso de un portátil…” Ahí vimos las funciones básicas y a volar. Las primeras impresiones son que es una pasada de dispositivo, que puede cumplir perfectamente con las funciones por las que lo elegí, algo de música, algún vídeo y fotos, además de calendario y contactos. En mi caso sustituye a un viejo iPod 3G de 15 GBs, y utilizo hace años la BlackBerry para consultas esporádicas en iNet y el correo.

Entrando en materia, os hablaré de la agenda, la aplicación Contactos en el iTouch, de la que cabe destacar que sincroniza los contactos de una manera brillante, respetando muchos campos personalizados, algo que discutíamos en la lista Mac-Valencia si haría o no, y aunque aún no me ha fallado el contacto de nadie, estoy seguro de que alguna peguilla saldrá, pero no es –en absoluto– lo vergonzoso de la sincronización iPod/Agenda. Esta es una sincronización que da gusto utilizar.

En cuanto al calendario… el icono muestra la fecha y día de la semana. La sincronización es muy buena, pero no diferencia los calendarios por colores ni con algún texto que te indique a qué grupo pertenece. Respecto a las taréas, directamente “pasa olímpicamente”. Este último aspecto sí que es grave para mí, ya que las utilizo bastante…

Aprovecho para comentar que durante los 2 primeros días pensé que la sincronización fallaba, poniéndome las citas de cada día en la hora que al sistema le dió la gana del día previsto. Descubrí (con ayuda de mi mujer que lo sugirió y no le hice caso pensando que el iPod lo daría por hecho) que tenía el soporte de zona horaria para el calendario en Cupertino ;-). Mira que lo primero que recomiendo siempre es pegar un vistazo a las preferencias y leerlas por completo, para ir viendo qué se puede y qué no se puede hacer… Lo gracioso y muy, muy Apple es que al cambiarlo en las preferencias (ajustes lo llama el iPod) de la aplicación calendario al volver a lanzarlo las citas aparecen donde cabe esperar.

En resumen bastante bien ambas aplicaciones (a falta de tareas), pero eché de menos en las dos un campo de búsqueda ya que es la herramienta que utilizo con mis equipos. Casi nunca voy directo a un contacto o un evento en los ordenadores con que trabajo, casi siempre lo escribo en el campo de búsqueda.

De las fotos, música y vídeo hay poco que decir, cualquiera que conozca los iPod Photo y Video sabe de qué va el asunto. Y si utilizas iTunes sabes o puedes saber lo que significa CoverFlow… Bueno, aplicado a la pantalla del iPod Touch la verdad es que deja a la gente alucinada cómo se pasan las fotos con el dedo, cómo gira la imagen en función de la posición (lo puedes hasta poner “boca abajo”), cómo puedes hacer zoom y navegar por los detalles de la imagen, cómo te permite buscar entre la música a través de las portadas de los discos, cómo se disfruta un vídeo… ¡y todavía no he probado ni mostrado como se puede ver a pantalla completa en una tele! Una auténtica gozada para uno mismo y para presumir un poquito.

De todo este manejo tan sencillo mediante la pantalla táctil multisensores, lo unico malo es que con lo bonita que es la pantalla y lo bien que se ve … da mucha pena ensuciarla. Y si eres un poco manioso te vas a encontrar frotando la pantalla una y otra vez, así que recuerda cargar con el trapito de limpieza o llevar ropa de algodón suavecita.

Ya, ya, estáis deseando que os hable del wi-fi, pues no va nada mal… cuando encuentras un sitio con wi-fi abierto (abierto de verdad o sabes la contraseña). En casa perfecto, tuve que buscar en Ajustes–>General–>Acerca de la “dirección wi-fi” (MAC Address) para darla de alta en mi router, pero una vez hecho, puedes navegar. ¿Perfectamente? No.

El asunto de YouTube, lo vi y a otra cosa… puro marketing referente a un tema que no me interesa. Navegar con Safari, la verdad es que no lo veo claro. Lo de navegar en estos dispositivos tan pequeños, no lo veo claro en la BlackBerry y aunque la experiencia es mucho mejor aquí, tampoco acabo de verlo. Navegar con monitores tan pequeños, tener que hacer zoom, clicar en el sitio se complica… las páginas (ahora lo se) se redibujan con las tecnologías de vídeo de Apple y pierden algunas funcionalidades… Escribir una entrada larga no es tarea fácil y aunque para el uso básico que hago de internet en la BlackBerry (consultas: traducciones, googlear alguna duda, buscar una definición, o ver alguna web alguna vez) este dispositivo es algo mejor que la BB, la verdad es que para una experiencia de navegación web, nada como una pantalla, al menos, de portátil…

Por supuesto, si a eso le sumamos que el iTouch no tiene “autoconexión” (necesitas una red wi-fi a la que poder acceder) … pues aunque no vaya mal para navegar no llega a ser útil hasta el punto que a mi me gustaría. No está mal, pero no es la solución. Tengo pendiente pelearme con los feed de RSS de Vienna para meterlos en Safari como favoritos … y así poder probar esa experiencia en el iTouch.

El veredicto final es que necesitaré un iPhone cuando salga, para tener algo parecido a lo que tengo ahora (iPodTouch+BlackBerry) en un solo aparato.

Por cierto … antes de escribir esta “review” descubrí anieto2k con truquillos para tu iPod Touch. Lo que más me gustó de él, es que ha llamado a su iPod Touch iTouch, igual que renombré el mío la noche que lo estrené “iTouch-silta”.

Por otra parte … todo el mundo se ha hecho eco de la certeza del rumor de que Apple lanzaría una web deaplicaciones web para los iPhone/iTouch, que me parece importante destacar aquí. Y, también en Apple, en el área de desarrolladores han abierto una zona específica para que hagas tu propia aplicación.

Utiliza “Navegación con teclado” (Preferencias del Sistema –> Teclado y Ratón –> Funciones rápidas de teclado ), una característica de Mac OS X que hace todo el interfaz navegable a través, únicamente, del teclado. Puedes ver y modificar los ajustes por defecto en el panel de preferencias del sistema que hemos indicado.

Spin Studio, la compañía creada por Ed Prasek, miembro destacado de la organización Apple’s Worlwide Developer Relations, donde creó para más de 150 desarrolladores servicios y programas de negocios y/o marketing, ha lanzado una zona en su web con trucos para apoyar al éxito a los proyectos de los desarrolladores.

Así que si programas para Mac, este es un sitio que quizá te interese.

Aunque iWork ‘08 tiene sus fallos, en general ofrece potencia con facilidad de uso a un modesto precio.

A través de faq-mac, entre otros sitios, y de la LSPM me entero del arranque del Encuentro Proyecto Grimm 2007.

Proyecto Grimm es el proyecto de un grupo de profesores y profesoras interesados en utilizar creativamante la tecnología en las aulas.

Ya hace más de un año escribía sobre los scripts de Doug Adams para iTunes y hace poco en la lista del GUM-VLC, Mac-Valencia, alguien se preguntaba cómo eliminar archivos duplicados en iTunes.

Lo curioso es que al poco tiempo en TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) hablaban de uso de applescripts para eliminar duplicados en iTunes. Ofrecían un par de ellos ya escritos, y cómo parece ser un problema habitual los pongo aquí para quien busque solución para este problema:

Una de las más potentes características para el manejo de imágenes en iWork ‘08 es la herramienta Instant Alpha (en el menú Formato). Instant Alpha te ayuda a convertir el fondo de una imagen en transparente sin modificar el objeto al frente, de manera que puedes poner ese objeto con un fondo distinto… Aunque el resultado final no puede compararse seguramente con lo que haría un hábil usuario de PhotoShop con tiempo, la herramienta es bastante buena, sobre todo por su sencillez y rapidez.

En Macworld nos proponen utilizar Instant Alpha, ya que es tan sencillo para preparar imágenes para otras aplicaciones. Si estás utilizando la herramienta en Pages o Numbers, sólo has de copiar la imagen resultante, copiar y pegar en otra aplicación. Pero si estás usando Keynote, la cosa se complica y es cuando este “hint” de Macworld cobra mayor interés.

Una solución es copiar y pegar la imagen en otro documento de Pages o Numbers y de ahí a su destino final, pero también puedes crear una Figura sin nungún relleno, posicionarla sobre la imagen editada con Instant Alpha y seleccionar ambas y copiarlas, pega en el programa de destino y verás que se ha preservado el fondo transparente.

Por supuesto, los mejores resultados los obtendrás con PhotoShop y mucho tiempo, pero por coste y facilidad de uso, la utilización de Instant Alpha de iWork tiene mucho sentido.

Ya otras veces hemos comentado la posibilidad de utilizar Automator para nuestro sistema de archivos de respaldo (backup).

En esta ocasión volvemos a la carga con la propuesta de la mano de Macworld que nos propone utilizar Automator para escribir una muy sencilla utilidad de backup.

Como reconoce el autor, un backup profesional quizá no debiera basarse en esta solución, pero al menos la alternativa propuesta es una buena fórmula de hacer una sencilla copia de seguridad de tus carpetas más importantes. Además de Tiger, lógicamente, precisarás un disco FireWire externo, un iPod en modo HD u otro dispositivo en el que guardar el backup.

No obstante, lo que pretende el autor con su propuesta es despertar el interés por los flijos de Automator, que pueden convertirse en muy potentes. Sigue leyendo este hint de Macworld.

Leo en TUAW sobre la herramienta de seguridad biométrica Eikon.

La seguridad biométrica en el Mac ha sido terreno estéri durant emucho tiempo, pero ahora parece haber germinado una solución, Eikon Digital Privacy Manager, que permite a través del hardware/software utilizar el scanner de Eikon para entrar en tu cuenta, controlar tu Acceso a Llaves, cambiar de usuario…

El escáner Eikon es USB, cuesta unos 40$ y que viene sólo con software Windows, pero que te permite descargar gratuitamente de la web de UPEK el Mac Protector Suite Preview.

Si la preocupación por la seguridad es cosa seria para tí y las contraseñas se están haciendo algo tedioso, una solución biométrica como ésta parece muy razonable y ajustada de coste

El otro día tuve que echar una mano a un amigo arquitecto que había comprado un Mac para una de las personas de su organizacion, en la que todos los equipos son Windows trabajando contra un servidor Windows 2003 Server. Allí estaba partiéndose los cuernos desde el día antes el “informático” que les había puesto el servidor y configurado la red.

El Mac, con Mac OS X 10.4.10 no había manera de que conectara contra el servidor, ni a través de smb, ni desde la ventana de Red. Aquello no iba, a mi me sonaba que había un error en la configuración smb en Mac OS 10.4, que hacía imposible conectar con el Win2003server, pero fui incapaz de encontrar la sintaxos correcta.

Cada vez que en un foro o página web encontrábamos una solución … no nos funcionaba. Al final tiramos a lo clásico, Dave en el Mac y a entrar directo al jo***o servidor.

Pero creo interesante compartir una de las soluciones que probamos (quizá nos equivocamos en algo, ya que no estuve durante todo el proceso, sino sólo al final) y, sobre todo el enlace MacWindows, Windows Servers and Mac Clients que parece tener todas las repuestas y el informe de todos los problemas de cada version del servidor de Redmond, sobre todo cuando empiezas de cero con todo el proceso y puedes comrpobar bien qué ha ido pasando y qué soluciones se han ido aplicando.

Macworld UK nos cuenta que el experto en PhotoShop Ben Long ha lanzado una colección de 87 acciones de Automator para PhotoShop, que permite al usuario “scriptar” casi todas las funcionalidades de PhotoShop.

La nueva colección de acciones incluye una acción “render” totalmente rediseñada y una nueva acción que elimina todos los canales extra de un documento, dejando sólo los canales de color relevantes para el modo de color del documento.

Disponible gratuitamente en Complete Digital Photography, por supuesto acepta donaciones. Incluye un manual de 71 páginas.

Para usuarios de CS y CS2, hay disponibles versiones anteriores del paquete de acciones.

Aunque los Macs parece que tienen cierta importancia en el entorno científico, este no es su carácter más conocido.

Por eso al descubrir aplicaciones como PsyScope X para diseño y seguimiento de pruebas psicológicas, me gusta compartirlo.
